TEACHING & TALKS

I’m hugely passionate about passing on what I’ve learned about crafting stories, creating memorable characters, and breaking into the highly competitive world of publishing. Occasionally, I host writing workshops and talks, as well as personalised, one-to-one sessions with aspiring novelists. I’ve collaborated with the Faber Academy, Curtis Brown Creative, Writers HQ, Curious Minds Festival and many more.

Testimonial from Carla Jenkins, Founder of RAW Writing:

“Sam and Jennie ran 'A Crash Course in Authoring' for Raw Writing in March. They were both, quite simply, superb. Beyond superb!  Imagine a TV presenter pairing that feels so natural and intuitive, and triple it. Jennie and Sam gave honest and frank accounts of their own experiences as authors, and what was especially good was how much they differed. This added texture and depth to the session and made it truly authentic. After the session, the praise came rolling in from attendees. Professional yet friendly and incredibly engaging. What a team!

Sam is an absolute delight to work with. As a teacher/course facilitator he achieves the perfect balance between professional yet warm and friendly and conveys information in an incredibly engaging manner. I could not fault the session that Sam ran for Raw Writing. It flew by, and I had excellent feedback from all attendees. I would book him again without hesitation…”

Janet Tay, Mentee:

“Having Sam as my mentor was one of the best things that happened in my writing and publishing journey. During our six-month mentorship, Sam provided invaluable advice on the writing craft such as pacing, character development and sense of place over our Zoom sessions. He was also generous with astute and detailed feedback which greatly improved the structure of my novel.

Not only were our discussions interesting and informative, Sam was always warm, kind and very supportive. An amazing feature of Sam’s mentorship programme was that it covered everything from craft to the practical aspects of publishing such as how to pitch your novel to literary agents, writing a query letter and a synopsis, and how to handle rejections. After I completed my mentorship, I took a few months to revise my manuscript, then started querying agents. It wasn’t long before I had an offer of representation and eventually a two-book deal. Sam’s role as my mentor was not only pivotal in starting my writing career but also left me with lifelong advice which I constantly revisit whenever I need reminders on how to navigate the writing and publishing world.”
